Gobeil's Study Aid - The Applied Financial Planning Certification Examination™

  • $24500

Gobeil's Study Aid for the AFP Exam is a computer-based study aid to help you prepare to write The Applied Financial Planning Certification Examination™, which is a two-part examination to become certified as a Personal Financial Planner®.

Windows Software

The Software will run on a PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 10. You install the study aid on your computer. You do not connect to the internet while you are studying.

The First Examination

The first examination is three hours in duration and consists of 100 standalone, multiple-choice questions. As preparation for the first examination, the study aid includes:

  • over 500 technical, multiple-choice questions to assist you in reviewing your technical knowledge of personal financial planning and develop your skills in answering such questions correctly under time pressure.
  • a facility which randomly selects 50 of those questions and presents them to the user with a 1.5 hour timer to test your ability to complete questions at the pace required for the Examinations.

The Second Examination

The second examination is three hours in duration and consists of one large financial planning scenario with eight to ten questions to be answered in a long-hand, written form plus a number of charts or data sheets requiring completion.

As preparation for the second examination, the study aid includes:

  • the same 500 technical, multiple-choice questions to assist you in reviewing your technical knowledge of personal financial planning;
  • 6 case-based scenarios each with 15 multiple-choice questions to enable you to develop your skills in analyzing the questions to determine the information that you need from the case study backgrounds; and
  • 20 case scenarios to be answered in a long-hand, written form plus a number of charts or data sheets requiring completion to enable you to develop your skills in formulating your responses to the questions posed for the client situations.

Technical Multiple-Choice Questions

The technical, multiple-choice questions will assist in preparing for both of the examinations. You can answer the questions by topic. You can also answer the questions as practice exams. To answer all of the questions and review the solutions, you will require at least 20 hours.

There is a button on your computer screen that says “Ask John.” If you have no idea as to the answer to a question, you should “Ask John” and review the concept before answering the question. It will make better use of your study time.

The solutions to the questions are quite extensive with an explanation as to why certain wrong answers are wrong. Some of our clients tell us that they learn quite a bit by reviewing all parts of the solution. However, this is quite time consuming and it would only make sense if you have lots of time.

The Software will make a random selection of 50 questions and present you with a mock exam. You will have 1.5 hours to answer the questions. After answering the questions, the Software will mark your answers and allow you to review the solutions.

You can complete any number of practice exams, each based upon a random selection of 50 questions. Of course, if you complete several practice exams, you will see questions repeated.

You can view three sample questions here.

Case-Studies with Multiple Choice Questions

The second examination is three hours in duration and consists of one large financial planning scenario with eight to ten questions to be answered in a long-hand, written form plus a number of charts or data sheets requiring completion.

Although the second examination does not include any multiple-choice questions, we have included six case-based scenarios each with 15 multiple-choice questions because candidates find that it is a quick way to get comfortable with analyzing questions to determine the information that you need from a case study situation.

The case studies should enable you to develop your skills in analyzing the questions to determine the information that you need from the case study backgrounds. To complete all six case studies and review the solutions will require about 8 hours.

The case study backgrounds for each case study are included in a PDF file with the Software. The case studies are in alphabetical order by the last name of the client. You should print a copy of the Case Study Backgrounds.

If you have no idea as to the answer to a question, you should select “Ask John” and review the concept before answering the question. It will make better use of your study time.

Case Situations Requiring Written Responses

The second examination is three hours in duration and consists of one large financial planning scenario with eight to ten questions to be answered in a long-hand, written form plus a number of charts or data sheets requiring completion.

The 20 case scenarios to be answered in a long-hand, written form plus a number of charts or data sheets requiring completion will enable you to develop your skills in formulating your responses to the questions posed for the client situations.

Each question describes a client situation and requires you to complete an analysis, prepare a written report, draft a plan or write a letter to a client. You produce answers in your own words, using your computer. These questions range from short-answer questions to longer, extended-response questions.

Although the second examination consists of one large financial planning scenario with eight to ten questions, we have included twenty case-based scenarios that focus on particular aspects of a client’s financial situation because candidates find that it is a quick way to get comfortable with the application of the technical knowledge that they need to solve a case study situation.

The study aid includes 20 case situations requiring written responses with detailed solutions. The questions serve as a learning tool, as well as a test of your preparation to pass the examination.

If there is a description of the concepts underlying the question, you will be able to select the button on your computer screen that says “Ask John.”

To answer all of the questions and review the solutions, you will require at least 12 hours.
