Concept

Upon becoming a member of a plan that is regulated by the Federal Pension Benefits Standards Act; your pension benefits are immediately vested. You are entitled to receive the accrued pension benefits when you cease to be a member of the plan.

 Definition

The carry‑forward of unused RRSP deductions is a provision that allows you to carry forward the deduction for RRSP contributions made after 1990 indefinitely and use it in a future year (ITA 146(5) and (5.1)).

Example

Five years ago, Mark contributed $5,000 to a spousal RRSP for his wife Karen.  Last year, Mark contributed $2,000 to another spousal RRSP. Last year, Karen withdrew $3,000 from the first spousal RRSP.  Even though these funds had been in the RRSP for five years, Mark has an attribution of $2,000 of this withdrawal because he had made contributions of $2,000 to a spousal RRSP within the previous 3 years.

So, Mark had to include $2,000 in his taxable income, while the amount attributed to Karen was $1,000, calculated as:

  •  (withdrawal of $3,000 – amount attributed to Mark of $2,000).
